Mechanical Drafting Product Designer

We are looking for a Mechanical Designer to support Mechanical Power Conversion (MPC) who is a team player with a high level of initiative and the ability to work in an environment of rapidly changing priorities.

Mechanical Designers at Collins work directly with engineering staff to produce 3-D models and 2-D layout drawings of the product to meet both engineering and customer requirements. Models and layouts show the complete definition of all components with consideration for manufacture and assembly. Designers are also responsible for creating and maintaining a complete BOM, using existing components where possible. Ultimately, the Designers and Drafters will document the components within the product assembly with detailed dimensioned drawings to support the manufacture of the individual parts.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Create 3-D product models, outlines, and layouts.
  • Create Proposal Envelope Solids in customer preferred formats.
  • Work with engineering for initial 2D concept of product.
  • Create solid model piece parts and housings in NX, support the move towards Model-Based Definition, direct to manufacture.
  • Perform tolerance stack-up analysis to ensure correct fit and alignment.
  • Create assemblies in NX and manage the Bill of Materials.
  • Create Layout and Balloon Sheets.
  • Create Layout Parts List.
  • Create dimensioned detail component drawings for high complexity piece parts.
  • Execute Collins Standard Work using Design Standard Features and Design Guidebook as appropriate to complete the task.
  • Investigate and improve, with engineering, current product design issues.
  • Support and participate in engineering design reviews
  • Support Interface with the Structures group to ensure that they have the necessary physical product definition to perform stress and thermal and dynamic analyses as required and as directed by engineering.
  • Support Casting Vendors to help generate of a casting model that can be produced
  • Work with Collins product definition and engineering support groups and coordinate assistance as required.
  • Lead detailing drafters in the completion of component drawings for a design project.
  • Status team regularly on task performance.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree and 2 years of relevant experience OR
  • In absence of a degree, 6 years of relevant experience is required
  • Must have or be capable of obtaining a US Department of Defense (DoD) security clearance. Candidate selected will be subject to a government security investigation/reinstatement and must meet eligibility requirements
  • Must be a U.S. Citizen

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with Siemens NX and Teamcenter
  • Proficiency in geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T)
  • Manufacturing and Model Based Design experience

Geographical Specification

  • This position is located in Rockford Illinois.
  • There is a travel assignment opportunity to Windsor Locks CT for the first 12 months
  • The option for a hybrid work model will be considered
