What’s Bench? Check us out in Medium, Betakit, Financial Post, Fintech Impact, Perkins + Will, BC Business, our Instagram, and our Blog.

We acknowledge that Bench headquarters is located on the traditional, ancestral, and unceded territory of the Coast Salish Peoples, including the territories of the xʷməθkwəy̓əm (Musqueam), Skwxwú7mesh (Squamish), and Səl̓ílwətaʔ/Selilwitulh (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations.

Our mission is to make a profound difference in the quality of life of one million people, by removing the financial complexity of entrepreneurship. Businesses need to understand their financial performance, but for many smaller ones, this means a trade-off between doing their books and running their businesses.

Bench solves this dilemma by taking bookkeeping off of their hands. Learn more about us on our About page.

We’re growing fast, and we’re looking for exceptional people to join us on this incredible journey. Check out our culture guide to learn more about what it’s like to work at Bench!

What does Design mean to Bench?

Finance is inseparable from the human experience. Our personal finances influence our mental and physical wellbeing, where we live, our education, our family structures, and the opportunities we do or do not have. Unfortunately, the state of finance is currently anti-human. Obtuse jargon makes it intimidating and hard to reach. Even to a point where it’s oppressive. It’s kafkaesque.

The magic of Bench is that we take all these things and disappear them for our clients. Put in your credit card, and poof, you are now protected from this underworld of terrifying initialisms and obscure maths. Working at Bench isn’t about fintech; it’s about understanding that there is a human behind every business making a difference in the quality of their life.

As a Senior Product Designer you will work with teammates with a shared passion for creating delightful and impactful customer experiences that will have a profound impact in the lives of people. You’ll set direction for the solution, take ownership, make calls, and see things through without a lot of oversight.

What you’ll be getting up to:

Zoom in, zoom out: We balance contributing to 10,000 ft strategy and obsessing over microinteractions. As a senior, you are comfortable in the embrace of ambiguity and are an expert at bringing definition to abstract concepts and ideas.
Be a pillar of the team: We each come as a specialist in sub-discipline, whether that is UX, coding, or research and act as the resident expert in that area and are the one we look to when we need help in that area.
Lead by example: Whether forming and storming with a build team or whilst mentoring team members, you are generous with your time, meticulous with your work, and bring calm assertions to the table when needed.

To be successful in this role, you’ll need to have:

8+ years of experience designing applications, experiences, products, and services that balance user needs, business objectives, and technological constraints.
Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to quickly understand complex systems and iterate ideas to improve them.
Enough experience, understanding, and context designing software that you know when to use established patterns and when to break them. Enough experience collaborating and communicating that you are a leader in bringing teams towards alignment on solutions.
An activated curiosity and openness to being an equitable and inclusive leader. Our commitment to anti-racism and anti-discrimination as a company excites you.
Empathy: We're all just human, y'know?
It could be an even better fit if you:

A well-developed equity lens: You actively engage in leadership of teams and of strategic-level work with an equity lens and an eye for inclusivity. You don’t just accept equitable practices, you model and advocate for them on your teams and in your work.
Appreciation for complex systems: Our bookkeeping operation and expansion projects are a complex system designed to produce high-quality financials on time, with a high degree of efficiency. You’ll have to think about the full system, connecting the dots to figure out the best solution.

The extra details:

This is a full-time permanent position because we want to spend lots of time with your wonderful self!
This position offers an annual salary ($113,500 - $170,300), stock options, and an extended benefits package that includes health, dental, and vision.
All Benchmates have access to Inkblot Therapy, our virtual counseling service to support mental wellbeing, and Bravely, our confidential, on-demand, 1:1 professional coaching service.
Our office has gone fully remote! We’ll set you up with everything you need to work from home, from day one.
Everyone has their own unique talents. Even if you don’t meet 100% of the qualifications outlined above, tell us why you’d be a great fit for this role in your application.

We believe that unchecked biases disproportionately impact the most marginalized people in society—including but not limited to BIPOC, LGBTQ2S+ people, immigrants, and people with disabilities. We strongly encourage applications from people with these identities or other marginalized communities because we believe that without you, we are all less. At Bench, we don’t stand for tokenism. We stand for representation.

A letter from our Head of Product and CEO:

Dear future Benchmate,

There has never been a more exciting time to join Bench. We’re on our way to make a profound difference in the quality of life of a million people, backed by incredible technology.

Finance is inseparable from the human experience. Our personal finances influence our mental and physical wellbeing, where we live, our education, our family structures, and the opportunities we do or do not have. In the mind of a small business owner, there is no distinction between their business finances and their personal finances. Working at a Bench isn’t about fintech; it’s about making a difference in the quality of life of human beings.

Bench is already the biggest bookkeeper in North America—we currently have over 10,000 clients, and in 2020 alone we processed $21B in transactions—and we’re just at the beginning of our technological journey.

Our Product roadmap is not only ambitious, but it’s validated in the market by real users and venture capital. It also defines a game worth playing, because success in this game means strengthening the backbone of our economy - the small business and the passionate people that make them tick.

Does this sound like the kind of difference you want to make for people? Let’s talk.

Sincerely,
Ian Crosby, Co-founder and CEO

To be successful in this role, you’ll need to have:

A resonance with our mission and principles.
Strong experience driving impact in a high performing product or business organization: Stripe, Shopify, Square, Google, Amazon, Uber, Bain & Co, McKinsey, BCG, etc.
A nose for value and the ability to connect the dots across business strategy, customer values, and market dynamics to drive our product vision, strategy, and roadmap
Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills, a keen perceptiveness to your audience, and the ability to authentically generate buy-in across multiple teams
An activated curiosity and openness to being an equitable and inclusive leader. Our commitment to anti-racism and anti-discrimination as a company excites you.
A demonstrable drive to grow. Fostering growth is what we do here, in ourselves and in our reports. Our mission is big, and we all need to grow significantly to achieve it.
